Fallout 3 DLC Review: The Pitt

Though the Pitt isnt really considered “cannon” which ties in with the Fallout universe and its story I still consider it’s overall presentation and story superior to that of Operation: Anchorage, partly because it gives you that post apocalyptic feeling that the fallout universe is so well known for, I cant go into too much detail as I dont want to spoil the story.  Some 20 years before the events of Fallout 3, Owyn Lyons led the Brotherhood of Steel’s expedition to Washington, D.C. through The Pitt. In one night, the Brotherhood swept through and destroyed the original raider force occupying the town and rid the surrounding area of other “scum”, killing anything that put up a fight, an event chronicled as “the Scourge”. As they cut through the raiders, the Brotherhood also saved several young children, among them Paladin Kodiak, who had not yet been mutated to the extent of The Pitt’s adult inhabitants. All the rescued children were brought into the Brotherhood of Steel as initiates. Paladin Kodiak is the only remaining survivor from that group of rescued children that is still stationed at the Citadel. Back to the present day: When The Pitt first loads,  you will be informed of a new radio distress signal from a runaway slave from the Pitt named Wernher,  who informs you that he  needs help in retrieving a cure for the mutations plaguing the town developed by The Pitt’s raider boss, Ashur.

Out of the two expansions I have played so far I must say that The Pitt is the most challenging of them, partly due to the fact that you aren’t allowed to bring your own gear into The Pitt but you are forced to leave it outside the city limits the same goes for any NPC’s that are traveling with you.  So you are basically forced to use whatever weapons you pickup during your adventure, while dealing with limited supplies of ammo, armor and weapons. Skills in unarmed and small weapons are a must if you want to make it through this expansion pack.  Enemies you will face include Trog, Wildmen, Pitt Raiders and Slave Fighters, the Trog’s being the most challenging of the enemies you will face. You are also introduced to a new weapon called a Auto Axe, it functions just like the Ripper but instead of a cutting edge it has a cutting blade.  It can also be repaired using Rippers.  The Pitt itself consists of two large areas, an abandoned steel yard and a settlement which is divided into two districts: Downtown, which is inhabited by slaves and Haven/Uptown, occupied by their masters, the slavers. The gameplay is pretty linear as you can only access certain areas in The Pitt and more areas get unlocked as you complete certain quests. Also completing certain quests in the game earns you three bonus hidden perks namely: Auto Axpert, Booster Shot and Pitt Fighter.

Worth the money? Most definitely yes, you are looking at a good solid 8 hours of gameplay if you explore the whole Pitt, do all the side quests and complete the main  quests. Which makes The Pitt even nicer is the ability to return to the town once you completing the expansion, so you can return to get all the loot you stashed away while playing. Not to mention some nice small guns and melee weapons can be found while playing.  I also recommend finding all 100 steel Ingots in the steel yard as you also get some nice items for completing it.
